The question is whether you are competing for a championship or the day.
The club championship measures the ability and consistency of divers who attend all the championship rounds, not their ability against visitors for one round.
The day measures ability against all the drivers on the day.
They are two separate and entirely different things that just happen to take place at the same time on the track.
It happens at all levels of the sport and of course is 'unfair', just as it would be 'unfair' to lose a race because you finished a long way in front but your engine stopped just short of the line and you pushed it the rest of the way or a novice blocked you as you lapped him.
The main thing is that the rules are stated before you join the championship and are applied consistently through out the year.
