It's possible that a circlip has come off one of the metal gears.

I've not heard of a failure yet but a quick lok will sort out the gear train aspect.

It could have dropped part of the clutch shoe as they do crack so just make sure the cover revolves smoothly.

Check that the rear sprocket hasn't come loose on the hub.

Did he have huge vibration like a TKM when the engine was running?
