The forces on these bolts, whether they are Allen bolts or the OTK shafts with the threads at each end, is in the wrong plane for which the bolts are designed for.

They are loose fitting and are subjected to severe twisting forces which will weaken them, usually at the point where the thread ends.

I don't agree that there is no way this should be happening, I'm surprised it doesn't happen MORE often.

That's why bumper bolts and king pin bolts snap as well.

If your pedal bolt snaps when someone rides over your kart, I would have thought that the bolt was on its way out anyway.

Sorting the pedal pivot and pedal problem out is very basic engineering design and I'm just so surprised that the MSA have never picked it up and asked manufacturers to address the problem.

The worst part is that the pedal design doesn't put the force down in the correct plane and the foot exerts a twisting motion on the pivot and pedal.

That's why pedals start to twist.

Maybe Colin R who is probably watching , would give us an opinion from another engineering point of view.
