...you say the rear wheels just spin.

You know that it is a direct drive so we just follow things through in a logical order like this.

does the rear sprocket rotate when you turn the rear wheel,if so then asuming the chain is on ok, it must be turning the engine sprocket.

If the engine sprocket is turning and it has a full compliment of teeth on it, look to see if the crankshaft is turning with the sprocket.

The sprocket should be turning with the nut.

if the nut is not turning then it probably means that the sprocket is slipping on the crankshaft taper.

Normally the sprocket is located with a thing called a Woodruff key that fits in a keyway

Look at the following link to see what this device loks like as you won't be able to see it without removing the sprocket.

Sometimes people fit the sprocket and either lose or forget to fit the key.

Some engines didn't even have one.

Sorry it's a long link.

If the sprocket is loose you have found your problem and need not read any more drivel from me but phone at work 10-5.30 or mobile 07759361238 and I'll tell you how best to resolve the problem as a few things will need to be done to make a good job of it.

If the nut is rotating with the sprocket then you are looking for a bigger problem but with a little help you can still investigate on your own.

assuming the crank is rotating, we are looking for the reason for the loss of compression.

Just check that the plug insulation part is not loose in the metal part of the plug.

They do fail sometimes.

At this point you will have to remove the head which is held on by four nuts usually.

IF they are loose, then again, you have probably found the problem. I have seen them completely loose before now.

Lift the head carefully off the studs WHILE HOLDING the barrel down on the crankcase, this is to prevent unnecessary damage to the gaskets that are on the bottm of the barrel and seal it to the crankcase.

There may be a round gasket between the head and barrel.

You will see the piston and it should look round and matt black or slightly oily black and have no damage on the dome or outer edge.

Look at the inside of the head to see if there are any marks that may indicate that something has entered the combustion chamber.

Hold the barrel down on the crankcase and turn the rear wheel to see if the piston goes up and down smoothly and look for any scoring or chips in the port openings that are exposed as the piston goes up and down.

If the piston dome is damaged in any way, you would be best to let an engine rebuilder look at it as, with respect, your knowledge of engines is still in its infancy.

Feel free to give me a ring.
