.. it is predominantly related to fuel mixture and hence combustion temperature.
If you are fouling a plug, its a 99% bet you have the mixture wrong, not the wrong plug.
However, occasionally the air density will be so far out of wack that the fuel charge will burn at a different temperature and require a different temp range plug.
The only sure way of knowing when this is occurring ,is to use an EGT(Exhaust Gas Temp) monitor.
