It is a fact that no two engines are equal.
For the world finals rotax ran all engines on a dyno and only used those that reasonably comply with the advertised power, discrepancies can vary from bad to good of 2 hp. I believe in the longer term rotax's new barrels will lead to a fairer playing field. The people who will absolutely not want them are those with 04 engines where if you know what you’re doing e.g what the scrutineers look for you can modify and some which are fast anyway.
Interestingly the 08 stamped engines used at the world's were the new barrels, so it is possible that several individuals are running the newer barrel already.
But for all of you that jump up and down over engines in rotax racing 'apart from blatant cheating' there are so many other factors that will determine how quick you are and the biggest of those is understanding the required set up for both engine and chassis throughout the race day, the bogey is not in the engine it is in the drivers ability to give good feedback and for his race mechanic to interpret what to adjust, without that it does not matter how good a driver you have he will struggle. so practice, practice, practice and you will gain the necessary knowledge, ability and experience I assure you the guys at the front have it.
Clutches though are a way to gain extra horsepower out of the corners and again everyone seems to chase the grease which is arguably legal, but what about special springs, shoes with a different material, shoes and drums which have been machined and shoes which have had a treatment? The quicker the old type clutches are moved out of the racing scene the better.
