Simon - A very clear and concise explanation. Thanks.
I would just like to mention one point - Plated barrels can be brought back to as new / better than new condition very economically indeed by replating using a pro outfit like Langcourt (around Ł130 including being honed to your clearance spec) .
Unfortunately the mighty magnificence that is BRP deemed that not only could you not replace the piston yourself, it was not allowed for anyone, including authorised sealers, to have barrels replated. So all you can do is dig deep in your wallet.
