Although I've never tried it and never seen it done I wouldnt recommend it. I'm sure it would impart a huge shock load through the crank which isn't the best thing to do and to be honest I think it would stall unless you're revving the nuts of it.

You would also stand a very good chance of getting excluded as the officials are not very happy when they se a kart with the wheels spinning and the back lifted off the ground.

If you are having problems starting then you're doing it wrong ! There is a knack to starting (as described many times by Itpro) and once you've mastered the knack you will not have a problem (my Junior driver can start himself).
