What difference does float height make to Max carb

Any suggestions/experiences???
I cannot see how changing the float height will affect performance (as long as the height is not at the extreme end of settings). The bowl holds a reservoir of fuel which the engine will draw on demand; too little and the engine will pop/die, too much - the carb will leak!
If the float height is somewhere in the ball park - i.e. there is sufficient fuel in the bowl, how can it possibly affect performance?
As stated at the beginning of this thread, any suggestions/experiences will be most welcome...
