if you look into the rules, when the engine is sealed there is a minimum squish. this is measured without carbon on. carbon build up can't deem the squish illegal as it is a natural build up and not mechanical so to speak.

i have hired a motor off of a engine tuner where when you looked through the spark plug hole you could visably see excessive carbon build up on the outer edge of the piston, but in the centre you could see that the centre of the pitston had the carbon removed. basically the carbon build up was removed in a certain area of the piston to alter the profile of the crown on the piston.

the piston was legal, but the carbon had been removed to alter the surface shape of the piston

this is a rule which has been exploited many times over the years in tkm ect.
