It is best to check end float before you strip the crancases down. Do this by clamping the crankcase to the bench and use a DTI (clamped to a suitable base and again to the bench) against the end of the crankshaft. Then move the crank from fully one way to the other.

Do all your calcs for subsequent changes (eg shims and/or alternate end-float) before you put the new bearrings in.
