I am in the process of replacing my piston and small end bearing. However, I am having a bit of trouble fitting the circlip at each end of the gudgeon pin. My process so far has been to put one end in and then just try and push the rest in. The clip seems a bit too stiff for this though and I'm bothered about scratching the piston. Any advice on a better method or am i just being a wuss?

Also, please can someone confirm that the gap in the piston ring should face the front of the engine (I forgot to make a note of it before I removed the old one!)
