You did nothing wrong in protesting him ... he broke the rules and thus he was DQ'ed.

However was it sporting? I'm not so sure.

Either you should have insisted that the rules were adhered to from the start ... or you decide to let it go. Letting the guy drive his best, win the race, then protesting the driver for a non performance enhancing technicality - that's not sporting in my book.

I'm not having a dig here - you can sleep easy as you clearly did nothing wrong... but you did ask the question "did I do the right thing?" .... and that all depends on whether your were intending to do the right thing in terms of the rule book or in terms of sportsmanship :)
