The 'lifting off' technique is critical in mini/junior max for the reasons given above (over-fuelling).
That is why some drivers can drive the same engine faster than others, it's all about feel and technique - something that comes with experience.

To give you an example (Junior max) at Rye my son would be back down to 1/4 throttle long before he reached the pit-lane exit, but this will be different for a Minimax.

Get him to give it a try on a test day - once he finds it he will be amazed. The 12.5 carb requires a lot more throttle control than the 8.5.

Once he gets the idea he should then be able to tell you whether the main jet is right or not. Having to press the throttle more (down the straight) is too rich, having to 'lean off' too much means it's too lean. A bit basic but see how he gets on.
You can also use this technique at corner exits rather than just stabbing the right foot down.
