Ye the Mags on the rear help the rear release out of the corner better as opposed to bogging down, however drivers will mix and match with allys or mags depending on what problem they have with their kart, they are just solutions to different problems you may have, i.e tyres overheating towards the end of a stint, you could try different pressures or different rims, all about testing.
