It probably wasn't rust though. It was originally probably caused by fretting.

This produces microscopic dust granules like cocoa powder but it is produced in the absence of moisture.

The bearing and crank was probably quite happy when it was in regular use but once it was left the problem occured and the bearings then seized on.

The dust is abrasive and harder than the bearings and shaft.

Engine without balance gears will suffer more, much like the TKM bt82.

It is a complicated process which can include 'false brinelling' and the vibration movement can be in the very low nanometers.
