Now an explanation as to why it wouldn't start.

You had fuel and spark but you had the spark plug out to check for that.

This relieved the battery of the extra current drain needed to overcome the compression.

This drain would suppress the spark if the battery voltage fell below a critical level.

A couple of other reasons for non starting is a duff spark plug that won't spark when it's under compression, although it sparks in free air.

Putting the throttle slide in the wrong way around so that the slide is on full throttle. The engine will never start if it's on full throttle.
