yep, back in the early days when my lad was 6-7 years old, they really helped us, many people frown upon them, but rest assured they do help.
go on ebay and search for "bike bluetooth intercom" you want the 1000metre version, you will also need some old nokia hands free head sets they are also peanuts on ebay, get 2 sets, as the mics and earpieces that come with the kits are utterly useless, just bin them, also get some surgical tape and tape the ear pieces into your kids ears, as they fall out once the helmet is on, also put a safety-pin in the helmet and clip the nokia mic to it so your kid can talk back.
whats really useful is you can also hear the engine rpm through the mic, so you can hear if they are on it or lifting and coasting.
but as soon as you feel the time is right you need to stop using radios, then I'd suggest you get a go-pro HERO+ (with the screen in the back) and start going through on-board film between sessions by simply watching the back of the go-pro with no need for a laptop, if you like you can blue-tooth to your phone for a bigger screen, I have just started doing this with my 9 year old son and have now caught him lifting too early into a corner and not accelerating soon enough, and its then just so easy to correct, it prevents any arguments or disputes, the go-pro never lies!
