X30 is the new up an coming formula taking over in some regions at MSA level racing. But Rotax has been running for many years and if you wanted to try non MSA / IKR racing for easy entry and low cost, Rotax would be a better bet. Fulbeck LKRC run both MSA & IKR, the IKR is very popular with strong grids - 20 on the grid in both rotax classes.
An average weight of a max kart without driver is about 80KG, you can get this down to about 76KG running lighter bits. Senior classes are 162KG for max lights and 177KG fat max!
Rotax runs MOJO tyres in senior they are D2's. New they are about £135 a set. Many Non MSA / IKR won't allow you to run new tyres, so you can run on good used (one race day old or one race day and a practice day old) which you can pick up for £10 - £30 a set. The wets are MOJO W2 about £145 a set new, scrubbed used are about £50 a set. Nom MSA will allow you to run on MOJO green label (the UK MSA is yellow label) that they run in Europe and you can new sets of these for £75.
Rotax senior will run sensibly to about 30 - 40 hours then a top end (piston & ring) is needed for £200 at any authorised rotax builder - the engines are sealed.
But if you want the engine to stay sharp and on the power top ends in terms of ring can be done at 10 hours and piston and ring at 15 - 20 hours.
Full rebuilds (including con rod) can be about £650, they say bottom end should be done on around 60 - 70 hours, but many run them for much longer. The conrod is the limiting factor, in 2016 a new one which is more durable (twice the life) will be available as part of the new EVO engine upgrade.
