Not sure if 97 are legal for MSA, think 98 is the oldest carb you can use. More of the pre 2004 - 04 carbs tend to be good compared to the post 04 as I understand they were hand built / made, post 04 they were mass produced. But as Alanr says you can have a bad early carb. check out the basics and test before buying, test on dyno is easier and make sure you swap all the jets carb to carb - you are testing the diffrenece between the carb bodies and venturis - not the difference between the jets which can be great - especially the main jets which is another very old laboured story again!!!!!!!!!
