Thanks Dave,

I have this evening taken the chain off and axle turns freely, I have also inspected the clutch to find the lining on each of the three sides runs from about 2-3mm on the one end to almost the metal on the other end thus assume clutch would be slipping causing the smoke. Is this normal for the friction material to wear unevenly? Recently had the engine inspected by John at Force who did have to realign the crank would the crank running out have caused this uneven wear.
