The most obvious way to get a temperature gauge / sensor on your kart is to buy the RR Temperature gauge and the associated sensor which already has a brass nut that screws into the cylinder head (eg: This: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kart-Digital-Temperature-Gauge-Brand-New-Karting-/380444845657)

Note the sensor has an M10 * 1mm thread, so the bolt head may be 12mm across the flats. Be a bit careful as 10mm Metric fine threads come in 0.75, 1 and 1.25 mm pitches.

This sensor fits Formula Blue and I suspect most of the Iame based heads, it may even be a de facto standard for kart engines.
