You can bend a steering column by hand and in many ways the standard steering column setup is an ideal bending rig. The track rods can apply all the necessary force and the load path almost bypasses the chassis.

This isn't to say that you cannot bend the chassis in such an incident but a bent steering column is not an indicator.

You don't want to stiffen up the steering column either, being ductile acts as a 'fuse', to prevent the loads being transmitted elsewhere more expensive.
