No, don't spray WD40 into the engine, it won't help and will likely make it worse.

Remove the plug and clean it with some spray carb cleaner - let it dry.
Remove the air box.
Pinch the fuel pipe to stop any more fuel going into the engine.
Pull the engine over a few times with the ignition off.
Replace the plug.
Switch the ignition back on and try to start it again.
Repeat if necessary.

If this doesn't work and the plug seems to still be getting wet and oily, it may be that your carb is dumping fuel. If you can, strip the carb and flush out the needle seat with carb cleaner and clean the needle. Put it back together again. Ideally fit a new carb kit if you have one.
Clean the plug and replace.
With the ignition off, then place your hand over the carb inlet and pull the engine over until you feel fuel on your hand. Switch the ignition back on and try to start the engine.

I would advise you to get a few spare plugs and keep them in your pocket. Also at first, clean the plug between each session as when starting out it is possible that your lad will not get the engine hot enough / revs high enough to keep the plug clean. Make sure that they don't sit with the engine idling when they come in at the end of a session.

Failing all this - take the kart to the track tomorrow and ask around for help - most people will be obliging as they have all been there before !!!
