A 9 litre tank will last just over an hour, so it is just about possible get through the 4.5 hours with only three stops/4 full tanks of fuel. In order to do this you have to be running on fumes though, so say 36 litres for the race. I think it is a little less marginal at Daytona as there are usually a few slower laps under full course yellows.

Short answer is we always leave a few inches in the bottom of the tank and take 40 litres of fuel.
