Hi Ian - how I've missed our debates! Here goes:
1) need a starter: But I'm crap at push starting and always Billy no mates. 2) servicing the clutch: quick, easy and simple. 3) the cost: Fair enough, but the V-Clutch is a lot cheaper to run than the old Horstmann ever was. 4) greater number of parts to go-wrong: Rare that they do, in 2 years never had a DNF or DNS because of a clutch. 5) Potential of stalling on overrun if tick over is too slow: Doesn't happen to me - ever - and I have minimal to no tickover. 6) inability to 'starve' the engine of fuel (deliberately) on the rolling lap: You can still pinch the fuel pipe and starve the engine of fuel - in fact I do so every race start. 7) higher tick-over speed reducing braking efficiency and increasing the total heat produced by the motor: They work fine with pretty well no tickover - not an issue. 8) Heavier: I went on a diet. 9) More rotational mass to accelerate (i.e., heavier 'flywheel'): Possibly an issue, but I'm not about to use it as an excuse. 10) Etc.. : Tricky one to answer, that.
I agree about the excuse for going off, and have so far found no good reasons to fall off the track in practice or racing. Occasionally in the wet, but in the dry it's pretty unnecessary.
