It's all down to evaluation. Yes, the clutch makes it easier to start and, possibly, better if you spin off..... but not always as you've just shown....

However, if you add-up all the downside of clutches:-

1) need a starter
2) servicing the clutch
3) the cost
4) greater number of parts to go-wrong
5) Potential of stalling on overrun if tick over is too slow
6) inability to 'starve' the engine of fuel (deliberately) on the rolling lap
7) higher tick-over speed reducing braking efficiency and increasing the total heat produced by the motor
8) Heavier
9) More rotational mass to accelerate (i.e., heavier 'flywheel')
10) Etc..

.... all go a long way to mitigate ANY potential benefits.

In racing terms, if you use a clutch so that you can 'survive' an 'off'..... then it's almost ZERO advantage as, once you are off enough to USE the clutch, your race is over anyway! Clutches MIGHT be good for beginners but.... for 'mature' racers...?

Added to the fact that a non-clutched driver KNOWS how disastrous an 'off' can be, that he will do ANYTHING to avoid the off or stalling and that 'attempt to avoid the off' will make him a BETTER driver (with practice).... then I know we weighed the concept of a clutch as a complete non-starter!

However, each to their own!

Ian
