I have see one being bump started but it was being pushed by another kart (mini) you wouldn't be allowed to do this at an msa meeting, and I also saw one getting started with a tkm hand held electric starter which unfortunately bent the crank of the iame. In my experience the iame starter spool doesn't just fail it will warn you first, I had the problem at the weekend I went to start my lad and I skipped off 2 teeth after the recoil it did catch on the second 2. I've never had all 4 teeth go at the same time, you just have to recognise the warning signs. The biggest surprise I had was when I went to purchase a replacement from Ian at zip north who informed me that JM had stopped supplying them as they had only enough to cover warranty replacements and the only way I could get one on the day was to buy a complete pull starter assembly. I have since checked a number of websites and indeed they are listed out of stock or removed from the site all together.
