L Shaped rings are commonly known as a "Dykes" ring. Not that common these days. But in any event all piston rings rely on combustion pressure behind the ring to force it outwards against the cylinder wall. The hone marks are there to help maintain an oil film on the cylinder wall. Note also that pistons have a texture in the form of small grooves, also to maintain an oil film. Whatever method of running in you use, you should just be mindful of the fact that too much heat in the early stages can cause the ring to 'glaze' and compromise ring seal.
