I run a big fleet of these engines and as we run in all weather conditions and driver abilities, I elected to leave the thermostats in. They negate the need to tape up the radiator and make them run at a constant temperature nicely.

However, I have recently had 2 of the thermostats stick CLOSED and they pressurised and popped the top hose off, lost the water and overheated.

Up until this point I've had no reliability problems with them, but they can stick closed, so be aware.
