Hi Dazz,

Most people in the racing arena take it out, whether this is for conjecture, reliability or BS I do not know. As you say I would be more likely to trust an engineer at Rotax then my local engine builder. However you do have to take into account what the rotax engineer was designing the thermostat for. This I do not know but it is probably tailored more towards reliability then performance. The engine history is that of a moped then leisure engine. It was never designed to be performance engine. So you would expect the thermostat to open early (i believe its 45C when the optimum is 'supposed' to 55C).

So to get optimum pace you may be looking at putting tape on the radiator any how. So if you are just testing and playing around I would just run the thermostat in it, if you looking for the final couple of tenths you may want to take it out to help find it.
