Is there a need for it? No. You can do all the things by hand, just as accurately.

Is it easier to do these things using the laser? Yes-ish. It's faster and easier to understand.

Is there a downside?

Well, price for one thing. A tape measure, spirit level and plumb bobs are considerably cheaper than the laser.

Also, it's possible to set things up on the laser without having a clue what one is doing, and so set things up that measure 'right' but are wrong. You can do the same thing with the tape, but you generally need to have some idea what you are doing.

Would I do it with the laser? Yes, but I wouldn't necessarily spend the money if money was an issue. On the other hand, if time was an issue,so that one wanted to re-set the kart between heats, then the laser is good.
