Probably had a practice engine for Saturday and a better engine for Sunday. Also the better drivers don't always go out there to 'win' a practice session. They are after giving the mechanic feedback. At the end of the day they put all the good bits together and hey presto 0.5 secs.

Also the best drivers will simply up there game on Sunday when it counts.
