Starting a clutched TKM whilst out of the kart is dangerous as with the tickover set,it can very easily set off on its own

I run a clutched TKM and on the odd occasion when i have been on my own i have either started myself or someone has started me(it's much easier finding someone to press a button than push you).

I say start myself,not by standing outside of the kart but by sitting in the seat with my foot on the break.It is pretty easy to lean over and start yourself as long as you keep the shaft of the starter level with the nut on the engine
