Ermmm,...

TKM engines don't often FAIL:, they just need rebuilds as they usage build up.

No you cannot electric start a TKM and then get in. It's against the rules on the dummy grid for a race.

If an old fat man of almost 60 now CAN still bump start a TKM on his own.... what's SO tough about that for you?

If you are REALLY worried about it:-

1) Buy a DD motor
2) Buy a starter.
3) Start the kart while ON the chassis stand while IN A STARTING BAY (with AT LEAST one other persom holdiung the front bumper with their hand ready for the brakes .... for safety sake.
4) Warm up the motor and use the brakes to stop it quickly once warmed.
5) Take it off the stand and do a simple run-and-jump start with your now 'pre-started' motor. the fuel will be up and primed and the engine will be warm and ready to go so it''ll be EASY! You will also have discovered if it was NOT going to start without ANY physical effort!

You say you want to choose something with less to go wrong and THEN you suggest a TKM with a clutch that'll make it slower AND will add at least two more items to go wrong that are TOTALLY USELESS for racing.... a clutch and a starter.... I am not sure you are thinking clearly, here.

It's not THAT unusual to ask someone to HELP you bump start in TKM racing. You will make friends at races and you can beg steal or borrow a push from SOMEone..... you simply do the two-man-run-and-jump technique. The starting is JUST a TECHNIQUE that, once you've been TAUGHT how to do it, is so easy it's just ridiculous... Kids, do it, Fat Men do it....... Old MEN do it.....GIRLS do it.... How hard can it be? Post your email address and I'll send you a suggestion of how to learn how to do it.....

Yes, you CAN rebuid your own engines or, more accurately, although you can do EVERYTHING for yourself (like QoT), you can also start by doing the bits that you DO feel you can do and ask a builder to do the harder bits which usually need doing less often. Over time, you'll do more and make even more savings.
