I'm not sure about the actual power output, but they are a fair chunk quicker than a Comer (we've raced both).

It's certainly too quick for the first rung of the ladder (although it is the first rung in the US), and probably too much of an initial investment. But for the next steps, considering the prevalence of Rotax in the UK and throughout the world, it makes sense, especially in light of the MSA's desire to see a class between cadets and mini's/juniors.
