Rechargeable batteries form crystals inside when they're not used and in a discharged state.

The crystals will go when the battery is charged but unfortunately because the battery is effectively open circuit at this point, the other two cannot accept a charge.


It needs a higher voltage to crack through the cell but this has the danger of blowing the circuitry as the cells won't zener the voltage because they are open circuit.

You can only 'flash' them if the battery is disconnected.
