HarryH1997,
To use a 12 or a 13 front sprocket is simply to give you a range of ratios. Sometimes you may want a ratio that a 12 cannot give, so you could change to a 13 to get it.

One of the lads put a table of ratios on this site a few months ago. You might want to search for it.

One advantage for the 12 is that the rear sprockets are smaller and stay above the chassis tubes and therefore more protected.
