Is this the old style clutch with holes in the cover, or the new style clutch?

Is the play that you are asking about, end float on the crank shaft?

Or is the cover feeling floppy and loose.

If it is an 11 tooth sprocket then it may have a worn sleeve which can be replaced easily.

If it is a twelve tooth it could be the needle roller bearing.

The washer under the nut also wears and will create end float on the cover but doesn't affect the end float of the crank.

You can see a step worn in the washer where the sprocket wears the outer edge of the washer.

2mm is very large so it may be that it appears that large but in actual fact is considerably less.

End float on a rebuilt Max is quite normal.
