The Formula Blue uses a cast steel liner.

As such there will be tiny imperfections after the liner has been honed and a new piston / ring fitted.

During the running in period the engine should benefit from the high film strength of a castor oil (eg: Castrol R40) for the first 5 litres then use a semi-synthetic (eg: Castrol 747) which combines high castor film strength with high synthetic lubricity.

The man from Castrol was a little suprised at this way of doing it, suggesting that you could use 747 to run in as teh lower film strength allows teh ring to shear through the oil and smooth the liner better, but as he ended, if R40 works for you, do it that way.

If you use 747, it is a clear oil,(designed for mixing with other oils for specialist mixes etc) so it's worth adding dye to the oil (two drops to a litre of oil)and then diluted between 2 and 4%(between 20 and 40ml oil per litre f petrol) so that you know when you have mixed the oil. (It's a lot cheaper than throwing away fuel you aren't sure about or seizing the engine for lack of lubrication) The advantage of dyeing the oil is that you only have to remember once to do the oil when you buy a new can, otherwise you have to remember to mark a mixed tank every time you mix a batch.

The main thing is to be sensible during a run in period, give the engine some extra chokes and work up to the full scream, rather than doing it within the first 20 yards of a fresh engine's life.
