Yes, that may work.
If you put the transponder in it's cradle, it will discharge at a rate designed by the manufacturers. A few cycles of charge & discharge may revive it.

But if it doesn't, I remember a similar thread so time ago, and believe there is a firm offering battery replacement at a reasonable rate: anyone remember the details?

In future keep it charged frequently, no battery benefits from being left discharged.
