The correct end-play on the crank has been quoted by "Les".

Vertical play is either the result of worn bearings, or worn crank journals: well-used engines seem to suffer from the latter.

Even in this condition, they will run reasonably well, but of course not at their best.
Solution?
New crank assembly.
