oh the only real difference i know of is the ignitions, the original engines had motorplat ignitions but if i remember correctly the factory burnt down so all newer engines had pvl coils/ignitions on instead, although bizarly my 5 series had a motorplat...so someone must have prefered them or had one lying around.

rule of thumb if you buy newer it will have more bores left in the cylinder i suppose, but not always!,

there are far more knowledgable people on here engine wise than me, im sure they can tell you a bit more about them
