They stop the chassis tubes getting scratched up.

Also, chain adjustment is very easy and doesn't change the tension when you tighten the bolts, so long aa you haven't loosened the bolts too much.

Downside is that because the bolts invariably go straight into aluminium or (rarely) magnesium, the threads are a bit weak, especially the front one that has less of a threaded portion.

They can be Helicoiled if they do strip.
