As Ian says not having the in line filter is one less thing to fail and the secret is properly preparing your fuel equipment, can, jug, funnel, oil measure etc. This will eliminate 99% of troublesome debris in the fuel.
HOWEVER, (sorry for the caps Ian) ALWAYS check the small filter inside the carb behind the 12mm bolt below the fuel inlet as this, being the last port of call on route to your engine where there is a filter.
