We have tested alloy and mag wheels and found mags to be better over a race distance on a hot day with sticky tyres than alloy wheels. We smashed a Douglas mag wheel in a pre final and had to run alloys in the final as didn't have a spare. We were faster in the first 3-4 laps , then much slower after that upto the point the tyres went off as they were too hot, cost us a lot of places and we were 7 tenths slower than before , even though most other drivers laptimes were similar to the pre final.
Ask some of the other drivers if you can borrow a set of mags just for a session during a normal test day and see the difference. That saves having to buy and try , I am sure many will let you use them for 1 session , even with tyres on.
I am interested in the science and physics around what makes a kart faster , but at the end of the day , if its faster after you test , and your driver is happy, sod the science , voodo black magic , call it what you want , but the time sheet is all that counts.
