Alfie.... we all agree they CAN make a difference. What gets David and me cross is when people PRETEND they know the REASON when common sense and a little bit of school-boy physics shows the 'reason' given CANNOT be true!
However, let's look at the problem:
We all know that ANYTHING will make a difference to a kart's performance from the quailty of the engine and tyres right down to the type of material your RACE SUIT is made from....
The difficulty seems to be deciding WHICH of 10,000 variables to try changing.... and in what order.
I would argue that the thing to do is to change those things which give you the GREATEST degree of performance improvement for the CHEAPEST outlay of 'time' and/or money.
On that basis, I'd concentrate on the following in the following order:-
1) Learn to DRIVE! This is the BIGGEST one! 2) ... adjust the chassis (and there's a VAST amount to be done in this subject) 3) Learn about tyres 4) get the BRAKES working correctly 5) improve the engine (carbs, etc.)
Once you have MASTERED those... then start looking at the 'esoterics' like low-volume-rims and suit materials.
The ONLY one of that first 5 of mine that is going to cost you LARGE sums of money will be the engine. However, just making your existing engine work PROPERLY (such as choosing the corect gearing) will improve your performance considerably.
So.... knowing what you know TODAY.... what subjects would YOU concentrate upon if YOU were starting from scratch again? .... and how far DOWN that list would low-volume wheels sit?
Widening the question.... what are the first 5 in YOUR list.... and in what order?
