Liam....
Your are not too bad at physics.... ask youself HOW a 'low volume' wheel would control the temp, better? Ask how a low AIR volumed wheel wouldn't imply (probably) a HIGHER METAL volume wheel.
The look up the reletive heating rates of Aluminium Alloy with that of Mag Alloy.
The ask yourselof if the STRUCTURE of a Mag Low Volume wheel would flex differently than an Aluminium Alloy wheel!
Then ask how anybody CAN know if it is the low volume, or the magnesium or the different structure that is making the difference!
Finally, ask how many karts have been RUN with on-board 'air space' temp sensor/recorders or even with on board tyre SURFACE temp sensors!
The point is, we KNOW they make a kart handle differently.... what we don't THINK we know is HOW they do it and whether ANY different set of rims may give the same effect!
Ask 5 karters why XYZ has an effect and you'll get SIX different answers!
