Interesting, I'm possibly at a point of being educated here!
The reason I am going (was going to go) for Mag rims was that I was told that tyre temperatures remain more consistent over a race distance. I've been struggling with tyres getting a bit too hot by the end of a race, or very hot by the end of a final. The fact that they come with bead retainers already fitted was a bonus, as I'm already down to 8 psi, and I's like to try 7. I also know that I want to try slightly wider rims anyway.
I'd heard that the low volume tyres come up to temperature a bit quicker, but I don't want that at the expense of tyres getting very hot towards the end.
I'm not sure I buy any of the ideas that installation stiffness makes a huge difference to tyre temperature, but I'm willing to be swayed by a convincing argument either way.
Finally, I'm about to try hubs at the front, so it's a good time to be buying wheels. I know I need to test, but an educated starting point is likely to save me money in the long run. I've tried a few widths in aluminium alloy, and I've decided as wide as the regs will allow is probably what I want for the current TKM tyres, especially at the front.
Give me a good reason not to try Mag and I'll buy (yet another) set of alloy wheels!
Thanks for all the input so far!
Liam
