I don't want to be rude, old son, but....

I have been doing karting for FIFTY TWO YEARS (this year) and I DO know wnat I am talking about on braking....

I did try to explain, 'semi-lock' to you. What we ACTUALLY do is to press the pedal until the retardation is enough to cause the wheels to LOCK as we 'jump' over a 'ridge' on the track's surface but to re-grip as we RE-gain contact with the track. For precision, the traction changes in relation to the downward pressure of the kart and thus, we don't need to 'leave the ground' to lose grip, merely to feel the effects of changing 'ground-pressure'.

Thus, we REPEATEDLY stall-and-restart between 10 and 50 times on any specific corner.....

Thus, we are NOTHING like ABS or car 10-20% rotation-reduction used in traction control in cars or super subtle braking systemns. We are more like a 50p piece tyre!

It works (I suspect) because tyres DO grip WELL when 'locked'.... contrary to what we are TOLD by the 'experts'!

However, if your tyre 'locks and STAYS locked' that contact patch overheats in milliseconds and the grip reduces. However, if we let the tyre lock..... and then move forward so that a DIFFERENT piece of contact-patch is moved into place and we do that REPEATEDLY with no part of the tyre EVER getting TOO hot.... then it works FABULOUSLY!

It can ONLY be done with karts (and motorbikes, I suspect) simply becasue we have a locked axle and NO FRONT BRAKES. We can thus control BOTH rear tyres at the same moment. Car brakes CAN NEVER deliver that level of subtlety simply because each tyre can rotate at it's OWN pace and the driver can only gain ROUGH control over the whole SET of them. In a kart.... the driver can maintain COMPLETE control over BOTH rear tyres with one simple pedal!

OK..... so you doubt me.....

Just go along to ANY top class race and get to the end of the LONG straight and WATCH the 'quick boys' .... you'll see semi-lock in action....... and you'll be impressed! It does take a LONG while to learn how to do it properly and consistently.....but it really IS a way to tell the 'men from the boys'!
